Anual Report 2008

Thank you – 1,503 times.

Dirk Elbers
Lord Mayor, City of Duesseldorf
Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Messe Duesseldorf Group

Our time schedule was sportsmanlike. We were perfectly prepared. And had great expectations – of 2008 with its event highlights. 1,503 people in the Messe Düsseldorf Group concentrated their commitment on one goal: to create for the trade fair’s customers visitors an environment that would counter the headlines of the business press by sending a really positive headsignal – indicating the prospect of establishing new, highly-promising business contacts.

In terms of international business, 2008 was a year full of turmoil. If the economic boundary conditions constitute a challenge, it is a matter of even greater importance to concentrate on the task – of putting every effort into achieving the goals that one has set for oneself. Of working on the quality of one’s services. And on the performance of the team as a whole.

The events cycle worked in favour of the business result. In the form of drupa, Messe Düsseldorf had on agenda an international magnet that pulled in exhibitors and trade visitors alike. A closer examination of the key indicators clearly shows that, from an international point of view, the attractiveness both of drupa and of the year’s other key fairs has increased even more. The percentage of foreign companies using Düsseldorf as a presentation platform in their various markets remained at a constantly high level – 56 percent. Trade visitors from abroad frequented the Rhineland trade fairs considerably more often than in previous years: 2008 saw the percentage of foreign visitors rise by 8 percent, taking it to an average figure of 37 percent of the total number of visitors through out the year.

This figure stands out as regards the key trade fairs: drupa, interpack, EuroShop and wire & Tube generated top attendance values of up to 60 percent in terms of international trade visitors – a clear demonstration of the quality level of these events which, worldwide, are market-movers and crowd-pullers in their respective industries. On about 1.5 million square metres of net hall space rented out, 32,488 exhibitors from all corners of the earth presented themselves to a total of nearly 2 million visitors – with a considerable increase in numbers compared with the various considerprevious events.

The upshot: at more than € 60 million, in the 2008 business year Messe Düsseldorf returned the best annual result ever achieved in its previous history. A big thank-you to the entire Messe Düsseldorf team for their dedication to the task. And a big thank-you to our customers, who made this result possible.
