Following his studies at the University of Stuttgart and the Georgia Institute of Technology where he gained a Master of Information and Computer Science and a Master of City Planning and Public Administration, Joachim Schäfer joined DATUM e.V., the Bonn-based institute for computer-assisted development planning, in 1978.
As early as 1980, he began his work for DELIA Associates (USA), formerly the foreign representative office in the United States of Messe Düsseldorf and subsequently the Hanover trade fair company. As Managing Director of Trans European American Marketing Company (TEAM) in the USA, his focus included organising conferences as well as developing and representing selected events staged by the Essen, Hanover, Berlin, Bern, Utrecht and Düsseldorf trade fair companies in the U.S. Between 1985 and 2005, Schäfer successfully grew Deutsche Messe AG’s American subsidiary. In the role of President of Hannover Fairs USA, he was responsible for the company’s entire portfolio of events and the associated activities of Hannover Messe in the USA.
Since June 2006, Joachim Schäfer has been a member of the management of Messe Düsseldorf GmbH where he is responsible for Management Division 2 and thus for part of the operative trade fair business. His area of responsibility also includes advertising, press work, Internet services, customer relationship management and information technology. He is a member of the Board of Directors of Messe Düsseldorf North America and Messe Düsseldorf India as well as a member of the International Association of Exhibitions and Events (IAEE), the Society of Independent Show Organizers (SISO) and of the Trade Show Exhibitors Association (TSEA).
Joachim Schäfer is an American citizen and is married with three children.
