At today’s meeting, the shareholders and Supervisory Board of Messe Duesseldorf GmbH appointed Joachim Schäfer as new Managing Director, effective 1 June 2006. In his new position, Mr. Schäfer will take joint responsibility for operative business together with Managing Director Wilhelm Niedergöker.

With this move, the Managing Board aims to boost its operative trade fair business and ensure stable growth for the company. “Our focus is on further enhancing Duesseldorf’s appeal as a premier trade fair venue and rendezvous for exhibitors and visitors,” said Werner M. Dornscheidt, President and CEO of Messe Duesseldorf GmbH after the meeting.

Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Joachim Erwin, praised Joachim Schäfer as someone “who would put his extensive expertise at the service of the company, helping to maintain its prime positioning in the international trade fair market in future and further expand operative business.”

As President and CEO of Messe Duesseldorf, Werner M. Dornscheidt will in future spearhead the international activities, which are developing at a very dynamic pace, as well as some of the fairs ranked No. 1 in the world.

Since 1985, Mr. Schäfer has been President of Hannover Fairs USA Inc., which involved taking charge of Hannover Messe’s entire portfolio and associated activities in the U.S.
After graduating from the University of Stuttgart and the Georgia Institute of Technology, Joachim Schäfer worked for DATUM e.V., the Bonn-based institute for computer-assisted development planning.
In 1980 he joined DELIA Associates (USA), formerly Messe Duesseldorf’s and subsequently Hannover Messe’s foreign representative office in the United States.

In his role as Managing Director of Trans European American Marketing Company (TEAM) in the USA, he continued to act as the U.S. representative for selected events staged by the Essen, Hanover, Bern and Utrecht trade fair companies.
Born in Mayen in the Eifel mountains in 1953, Joachim Schäfer has meanwhile adopted American citizenship. He is married with three children.
