We are committed to a sustainable future. With our measures, we conserve resources and the environment. Find out more on this page.
How we minimise the environmental impact of our events
Energy and resource efficiency have long been established and practiced principles at Messe Düsseldorf. Since 2014, we have been ISO 50001 certified and operate our premises according to a strategic energy management system. This has enabled us to significantly reduce the energy consumption and environmental impact of our event operations. Since the reference year 2011, we have been able to reduce our annual CO2 emissions in Scope 1 and 2 by approximately 19,500 tons. However, we remain ambitious: Through continuous improvements, we aim to gradually make our events more resource-efficient.
Important measures and achievements on the path to more sustainable trade fairs:
We run our entire grounds, including the stands of exhibiting companies, on green electricity.
Messe Düsseldorf currently generates approx. 550,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually with 3 photovoltaic systems. The installation of photovoltaic modules on further roof surfaces is being examined.
We largely avoid the use of aisle carpets.
For our own stand constructions, we utilize system stands and components that can be stored and reused.
We prioritize short transportation routes and predominantly collaborate with local service partners who have on-site storage facilities.
For appointments in Düsseldorf and transportation within the exhibition grounds, we use electric cars and electric cargo bikes.
Between 2010 and 2019, we successfully reduced the specific electricity consumption for events in Düsseldorf by up to 52 percent through various efficiency measures.
Although the hall exhibition area has increased, we have been able to reduce the heating energy requirement by up to 30 per cent annually compared to the year 2000.
We are consistently using LED technology and are gradually converting all systems.
In both our administration and exhibition halls, we have installed water-saving aerators and light sensors at the sinks.
In catering, we favor regional offerings and plan according to demand to minimize food waste.
We make it easier for our customers to separate waste by providing appropriate containers and collection points, including for production waste during the runtime.
Your contribution to more sustainable events
Environmentally friendly travel
The most environmentally friendly way to travel to our events is by public transport - Messe Düsseldorf has its own underground station and several bus stops.
For visitors and exhibitors, we offer a convenient and easy way to purchase a so-called Düsseldorf Ticket directly in the ticket shop in addition to the trade fair admission ticket. The Düsseldorf Ticket is valid in the entire Düsseldorf city area. For journeys beyond the city limits, we recommend the eezy Ticket of the Rheinbahn.
For further travel by train, you can book an event ticket with Deutsche Bahn for all our events. This allows you to travel to our events from all stations within Germany at a fixed price. A one-way ticket can be booked from € 51.90, and the onward journey from the station to the exhibition grounds is then included in the ticket. Information on the event ticket and the booking link can be found here: Event Ticket
Sustainable exhibiting
When it comes to more sustainable trade fair presentations, there are numerous aspects to consider. Whether it's in the planning of the booth and its materials, the selection of technology, promotional materials, transportation, or catering – every detail matters – before, during, and after the trade show. In this way, you too can contribute with your stand to making our events more and more sustainable.
In our guide for a more sustainable trade show presentation, we have provided specific tips and guidelines on these and other key factors for you: Exhibit sustainably
Donate leftovers
Messe Düsseldorf cooperates with Tafel Düsseldorf e.V.. Subject to sufficient capacity at the Tafel for collection and storage, their volunteers will be happy to collect leftover food, give-aways and other goods from your stand at the end of the fair and make them available to people affected by poverty in Düsseldorf and the surrounding area. Here you will find a list of things that the Tafel collects. Passing on leftovers from open catering is not permitted for hygiene reasons.
We will handle the logistics in coordination with Tafel. You only need to register the goods with Tafel (Contact: Tafel Düsseldorf e. V., Ms. Bruns, Ms. Schütze, Tel: +49 211 4360103, info@tafel-duesseldorf.de, Office hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM - 2:30 PM).
