Innovation Needs Connection: 5G at XPONENTIAL Europe

As soon as technologies are put into action, innovation becomes an experience. Trade shows provide the ideal stage for that. XPONENTIAL Europe in Düsseldorf, dedicated to autonomous and uncrewed systems, brings together a particularly innovative industry. Here, drones fly over the Rhine, teleoperated buses travel across the exhibition grounds, and robots move through the halls. Alongside all of these data-intensive applications in a highly concentrated space, thousands of visitors are online at the same time. In an environment like this, a conventional mobile network quickly reaches its limits: the more people and applications access a network cell simultaneously, the scarcer capacity becomes. And for autonomous systems and AI-based products to perform reliably under live conditions, they need an infrastructure working behind the scenes at peak performance in real time.

That is why XPONENTIAL Europe uses a dedicated 5G campus network from Vodafone for exhibitors. The Düsseldorf-based telecommunications company is the official connectivity partner of the innovation trade show. To make this possible, Vodafone teams installed 1.75 kilometers of cable and eight network antennas on site. At the heart of the campus network is RedBox #1, located in Hall 1 and roughly the size of a phone booth, which houses the entire system. The 5G campus network is separate from the public visitor network and provides the bandwidth and near-zero-latency transmission that exhibitors and their applications require. This is critical: robots, vehicles, and other autonomous applications depend on the continuous, real-time exchange of vast amounts of data – something only 5G can deliver.

At a trade show, innovation does not begin at the booth. It starts with the technological requirements that make real-world testing, live demonstrations, and connected applications possible in the first place. The 18 ground-level halls at the Düsseldorf exhibition center, each offering up to 25,000 square meters of space, also enable machines to operate under real conditions at major trade shows such as interpack, K, drupa, and "The Bright World of Metals". The floors can support ten metric tons per square meter, while walk-in supply channels create a dense network of connections for compressed air, electricity, water supply, and communications infrastructure. At formats such as XPONENTIAL Europe, where autonomy, robotics, and artificial intelligence take center stage, connectivity is not an add-on – it is a fundamental part of the overall concept.

What is more, requirements are growing. At XPONENTIAL Europe, applications are showcased not only inside the halls but also outdoors, where they must perform just as reliably. Accordingly, the campus network is prepared and tested before the event begins with different locations and usage scenarios in mind.
